My Account Water Meter Switching to a meter

If your fixed unmeasured charge is high, you are a low user or you live on your own, you could save money by having a meter installed. A lot of our customers have already made the switch to a water meter and found it works in their favour.

Here's the benefits of switching to a water meter:

  • It's free to have a meter installed (domestic customers only).
  • The less water you use, the lower your bill.
  • You could save money.
  • Customers with a water meter tend to use less water.
  • Helps reduce your carbon footprint.
  • You can switch back to your unmeasured charge at anytime up to 2 years from the date the meter was installed*.

*This option is only available to the customer who requested the meter installation. Therefore, if you have moved into a property which has a water meter already, we are unable to remove the meter.
If you have had a meter installed at the property in the past and you switched to an unmeasured charge, you will not have the option to switch from a meter to an unmeasured charge again.

About measured charges

Measured charges are based on a fixed service charge plus how much water you use. If you decide to switch to a water meter, we'll send you a bill every six months (when we read the meters in your area). This means you will no longer receive your annual unmeasured bill. Find out more about measured charges.

Still unsure if a meter is for you...

Before you decide, you can use our online usage calculator. We'll ask you some questions and then estimate your usage and charges. This may help you decide if a meter is right for you.

Please be aware our calculator is reliant on accurate information from you. If you are unsure about any of the questions, you can complete the calculator another day once you have thought about how you use water.

Once you have completed the calculator, if you are unhappy with your estimate, there is no requirement to apply for a meter. You may return to our homepage.

How to apply for a meter

If you would like a meter installed:

Step 1

Complete our online usage calculator. We can then estimate your usage and estimate your charges.

Step 2

If you are happy with your estimate, complete our online application form by clicking the 'apply for a meter' button at the end of our calculator. We'll install a meter within 3 months of receiving your online application form (where practical to do so).

Step 3

Our contractor will contact you via phone or letter to arrange an appointment to visit your property.

Step 4

Our contractor will visit to check if a meter can be installed.

Step 5

If the meter cannot be installed that day, our contractor will arrange to visit again at a later date.

Please note your unmeasured charges are payable up to the day the meter is installed. Therefore, it's important you adhere to your payment plan whilst you are waiting for a meter to be installed.

Within one month of the meter being installed, we will update your water account and send you written confirmation of any necessary adjustments. There is no need to contact us during this time.
