Welsh Water is firmly committed to water conservation and promoting water efficiency. Water is a renewable resource but is finite and the amount that is available each year depends upon rainfall. The water resource position of Welsh Water’s area of supply is relatively strong. We abstract for public supply around 3% of annual effective rainfall in our region, of which 96% is abstracted from rivers supported by releases from our impounding reservoirs.
We operate reservoirs across Wales to ensure that we can meet our customer demand, whilst respecting the environment in which we live. To do this, we continuously monitor the levels of our reservoirs to ensure we are operating in an optimal manner. However, it is still important that our customers use water wisely, and as part of our ‘Be Waterwise’ campaign, we are saying “use as much drinking water as you need, but please don’t waste it.”
We are also asking customers to let us know if they spot a leak on a water main by calling our Leak Line on 0800 281 432, and we will fix it as soon as we can.
Further information can be found in our water efficiency and water resources area.
Whatever the weather using water wisely is one of the everyday activities we can all do to help combat the affects of climate change, our TOP TEN tips are: |
1 |
Limit your shower to four minutes and save water, time and energy costs. |
2 |
Don’t let the tap run when you’re brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your hands. |
3 |
Fit a ‘hippo the water saver’ bag into your toilet cistern and save up to three litres of water every time you flush. Ring us on 0800 052 0138 for your free hippo bag. |
4 |
Only use your washing machine or dishwasher when they are fully loaded. |
5 |
Fix any leaking or dripping taps. |
6 |
Use a hand held hose or watering can instead of a garden sprinkler, because a sprinkler uses as much water in one hour as a typical family uses in two days. |
7 |
The average 12 foot above ground swimming pool takes 6000 litres of water to fill: that’s enough to fill 75 baths. Careful management of your pool’s water quality will ensure you can enjoy it throughout the summer, without repeatedly emptying and refilling it. |
8 |
Use a water butt to collect rainwater from your roof to use for garden watering. It will fill surprisingly quickly during a summer shower. |
9 |
Check the weather forecast before watering garden plants – in case rain is on its way. |
10 |
Consider buying plants that don’t need much watering. |
