Welsh Water supports International Year of Biodiversity

The United Nations 2010 International Year of Biodiversity celebrating the diversity of life on Earth, including every plant, animal and micro-organism.

Biodiversity is essential for sustaining the natural living systems or ecosystems that provide us with food, fuel, health, wealth, and other vital services. International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) aims to increase awareness of the importance of biodiversity for our well being, halt the loss of biodiversity and celebrate success stories.

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is a member of the UK partnership for IYB and has committed to raising awareness of the importance of protecting natural resources and promoting the understanding of biodiversity.

As a company, it is committed to enhancing biodiversity whilst delivering its services, or managing its sites, and has strict conservation policies and strategies in place to support these aims.

Welsh Water’s Environmental Manager Dusitaporn Thomas said: “IYB provides an opportunity for us to raise awareness and fulfill our commitments to biodiversity. Our employees are being encouraged to seek opportunities to contribute to the enhancement and conservation of biodiversity on their sites and their schemes.

“A number of activities linked to biodiversity that the public can take part in will be taking place at our recreational sites throughout the year and details of these can be found on our website as well as the official IYB website.”
