Welsh Water is committed to long-term strategic planning of water resources in Wales to ensure that there will be sufficient water to meet the ever-changing needs of its customers. Along with all other UK water companies, Welsh Water therefore produces a ‘Water Resources Plan’.
To ensure that we can continue to maintain supply into the future Welsh Water must consider all the factors, which could potentially impact upon either the availability of its resources or the demands on its supply. This includes changing population, climate change, changing legislation and changes in the amount of water we all use.
Our water supply area is split into 24 water resource zones. A water resource zone is the largest zone in which all customers can have equal security of supply i.e. water can be shared across the zone. In 2004, Welsh Water produced a Water Resources Plan for each of these zones and a 25-year strategy was developed to consider the balance between available supply and demand.
In 2004, the Plan identified eight zones where future investment was required to ensure that supply could be maintained to all our customers at the same level of service. Click here to see a map illustrating the planned investment across Wales.
The Water Resources Plan will be reviewed during the next year and a Draft Water Resources Plan will be available for consultation from October 2007.
