The consultation has now closed

Welsh Water is committed to ensuring that in the future there will be sufficient water to meet the requirements of our customers. To prepare for this we produce a Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP) and a summary overview.

This Draft WRMP outlines our 25 year water resource strategy for managing water resources across our supply area and maintaining the balance between supply and demand.

Welsh Water, along with all other UK water companies, has published plans since 2000. However, following an amendment to the Water Industry Act 1991 this is the first time that a statutory WRMP has been published for formal public consultation. If you would like to know more about the consultation process, please click here.

To ensure that we can continue to maintain supply into the future Welsh Water must consider all the factors which could potentially impact upon either the availability of our supplies or the demands made on our resources. This includes accounting for changes in population and the amount of water we all use, the effects of climate change and changing legislation that may lead to us abstracting less water from the rivers in Wales.

The Draft WRMP identifies deficit zones where demand is exceeding (or forecast to exceed) supply and identifies appropriate solutions to either increase supplies or to manage demand. We have looked at a wide range of options that include new water resources, the use of sea water, repairing leaks on pipes and the promotion of water efficiency measures. To find the plans in your local area please click here.

In accordance with section 37B(3) of the Water Industry Act 1991, Welsh Water confirm that we have not excluded any information from the plan by virtue of section 37(B)10.

The choice of options to meet any deficit has been influenced by a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). The SEA has also been published for formal consultation separately to the Draft WRMP. If you would like to read and comment on the SEA please click here.

A Habitats Regulation Assessment has been completed for the draft WRMP to ensure that the draft WRMP does not have any 'likely significant effects' on European designated Natura 2000 sites.
